'Passing Through' (2005)

Single screen digital video projection 1'30 (size variable)

'Passing Through' traces a journey on a bus through the heart of London's west end, creating a visual and aural stream of consciousness that encapsulates the distinctive blurring of impressions that are experienced within such a chaotic street environment. By superimposing this continuously shifting scene with footage shot from a window of a train leaving Waterloo station, a more fluid sequence is produced that signifies the multiple perspectives of city life through an experimental montage that deals with issues of fragmentation and alienation, informed by the simultaneous nature of cubist painting.

The incessant movement of the abstract shapes and colours of the rapidly fleeting traffic and pedestrian activity, ends with the unexpected appearance of passing trees from the over layered train journey that seem somewhat out of place, yet competes for attention against the dominating streetscape, creating a kind of dichotomy between these urban and rural environments. The closing shots of the unidentified lone female bus traveller overlap with the seductive rhythm of the distorted trees as it cuts briefly between these two places, possibly revealing her inner longing for escapism from her ritualistic city commute.
